Dinefwr Park
Is one of the most illustrious places in Welsh history, a stunning 800 acre estate on the outskirts of the old farming town of Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire. It is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the only parkland National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Wales, Dinefwr Park is a microcosm of Welsh heritage and natural history.
Dinefwr Wildlife
Here there is a dense population of some of Britain’s most astonishing native and migrant birds, the estate is home to many of Britain’s most elusive mammals such as otter, pole cat, voles, fallow deer and badgers. Also on the property is the ancient and rare breed of White Park Cattle
Dinefwr hosts badgerwatch evenings between May and August, which is a real treat to observe the private life of such an elusive mammal. Dinefwr also has a hundred-acre medieval deer park, where a herd of over 100 Fallow Deer roam. Dinefwr ancient woodland is home to some of the oldest trees in Britain. There is over 300 Oak Trees some that are over 400 years old, making them true veterans and providing vital ecosystems of diverse species.
Dinefwr Heritage
Newton House found on the Dinefwr estate was built in 1660. Most of what you will be able to see of the grand building today dates back to the 1850s, when it was given a fashionable Gothic facelift, with stone cladding and four impressive turrets.
Newton House was the home of the Rhys (or Rice) family. They were descendants of the powerful Princes of Deheaubarth, who ruled from the nearby Dinefwr Castle; perched on top of the hill overlooking the Towy valley. George and Cecil Rice designed the landscape around Newton House. The family ran into financial difficulty and had no choice but to sell Newton House and was used by some rather diverse individuals – an antique dealer, squatters and even a television company. However in 1990 the National Trust took over, having already bought the deer park and parkland National Nature Reserve (NNR) that surrounded Newton House four years prior.

The Car Park is free to National Trust or Cadw Members, non-members will have to pay £5.
