We thought we would share some awesome and some pretty weird Fun Facts about Pancakes and Pancake Day that you might not know about. So, the next time the Kids ask about Pancake you will be totally ready for them!
Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday observed by many Christians.
Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to use up fresh items such as eggs, butter and milk before fasting for Lent and pancakes are the perfect way of use these up. Over the years as pancakes became a traditional custom to eat as a meal on Shrove Tuesday, in the UK, Ireland and parts of the Commonwealth, Shrove Tuesday started to be called Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday.
The Lenten season last for 40 days from Ash Wednesday and is when people give up certain things, such as chocolates and sweets or in many cultures, this means no meat, dairy products, or eggs. The 40 days of Lent is to help them remember how Jesus spent the similar length of time fasting in the wilderness.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the Largest Pancake ever made was by The Co-operative Union Ltd based in Manchester, England, UK. The pancake measured 15.01 m (49 ft 3 in) in diameter and 2.5 cm (1 in) deep at Rochdale, Greater Manchester on 13th August 1994.
There are of course many variations of a pancake you can make, however, to make the basic Pancake you will need Flour, Milk, Eggs and Salt. Some people also see butter as another basic ingredient to fry the pancake in or to serve with.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the largest serving of pancakes at one time is 12,716 achieved by JSC MAKFA in Moscow, Russia, on 25th February 2017. It took 16 chefs cooking around 8 hours to make them and afterwards they were given away to the public.
When cooking a pancake its important to cook it on both sides, which started a tradition of tossing the pancake onto its other side. Over the years people have tested their Pancake Tossing Skills and as it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the Highest pancake toss measured 9.47 m (31 ft 1 in) and was achieved by Dominic Cuzzacrea from America at Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga in New York on 13th November 2010.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the most tosses of a pancake in one minute is 140 and was achieved by Brad Jolly from Australia in Sydney, Australia, on 21st February 2012.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the tallest stack of pancakes is 101.8 cm (3 ft 4 in) it was made up of 213 pancakes and was made and stacked by James Haywood and Dave Nicholls at Center Parcs Sherwood Forest in Rufford UK, on 8th February 2016.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the most people tossing pancakes at the same time is 890 people and was achieved at an event organised by the University of Sheffield in UK, on 15th February 2012. Although 930 participants took part in this event 40 participants were excluded as they either dropped their pancake or didn’t managing to actually toss their pancake within the allotted time
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the most pancakes made in one hour by an individual is 1,127 and was achieved by Erica Price from America in Kansas, on 17th April 2016. Funny thing is it must run in the family as it was Erica's father, Steve Hamilton, who held this record both in 2006 and in 2009, mind you it was Erica's father's idea to attempt this record in the first place.
As it stands on 2019 Pancake Day the fastest marathon run while flipping a pancake continuously in a frying pan, was completed by Mike Cuzzacrea from America at the Casino Niagara International Marathon and took him 3 hr 2 min 27 sec on 24th October 1999.
