How to Take Part in the RSPB BIG Garden Birdwatch in West Wales

Are you wondering what is involved in taking part in the RSPB BIG Garden Birdwatch this year? It’s very simple and we have all the info you need to help

What is the RSPB BIG Garden Birdwatch

The Big Garden Birdwatch is the world's largest garden wildlife survey and takes place at the end of January every year. This year it will be held on 29th to 31st January 2021. It takes place over three days, so if you're busy over the weekend or the weather is not great, you can still try to take part on third weekday. It involves you watching the birds and recording which you see for just one hour.

Started in 1979 it was to give children a winter activity to take part in and now it allows the RSPB to monitor trends and helps them understand how birds are doing

How to Take Part in the RSPB BIG Garden Birdwatch in West Wales

It’s easy to join the Big Garden Birdwatch and a great excuse to watch your garden birds.

First off simply pick where you will be watching the birds for an hour between 29th and 31st January 2021. Make sure your comfy and warm, you can watch from inside or outside. Get all your essentials within easy reach like a nice drink, Hot chocolate is always a winner! Maybe a snack and most importantly somewhere to write down what you see.

It’s not a problem if you don’t have a garden you can either go to your local park

Few Tips for when you’re Counting the Birds

When you are counting the birds, you need to write down the maximum number of each species you see at any one time. So, for example, if you see a group of three house sparrows together and later another two, and after that another one, the number to submit is three. That way, it’s less likely you’ll double-count the same birds.

It is super important that after you have completed your birdwatch that you return to the Big Garden Birdwatch page on the RSPB website and tell them what you’ve seen. Even if you didn't see anything, it’s good to let them know and that is still really useful information.
