Today launching earlier than planned is the UK arm of Online Book Store Bookshop.org and Welsh Bookshops have decided to join forces in what is being described as a “revolutionary moment in the history of bookselling”
Never before has there been a better time to support your local book store here in Wales than during this latest National lockdown as the Welsh Government places reading books on the non- essential list and tells us to go online to purchase any that we may want.
Out of habit many of us will find ourselves clicking onto the online bookseller giant Amazon to browse the virtual shelves for our next great read to escape into.
However, what if we told you that launching today is a new website that can not only help you find your next page turner, but also help you shop local and support our Welsh Independent Bookstores!
Bookshop.org website successfully launched earlier this year across the US earlier this year in attempt to prove a local alternative Amazon.
has accelerated UK plans and goes online this week in partnership with more than 130 shops
This new website has been the creation of writer and co-founder of Literary Hub, Andy Hunter and so far, has partnered with over 130 UK Bookshops with another 200 expected to join by the end of 2020.
Bookshop.org is an online bookshop with a mission to financially support local independent bookshops.
The Bookshop.org website allows our local independent bookshops to create their very own virtual shopfront on Bookshop.org site with all the local shops receiving 30% of the price of the book sale.
All customer service and delivery of the books are handled by Bookshop, with titles offered at a small discount and delivered within two to three days.
There is no option for in store pick up, all orders placed online will be delivered direct to your door, if you really wish in store pick up then your best bet is to obviously contact your local book store to arrange this.
Bookshop doesn't make a profit off book shop sales as they give 30% commission to the local store, around 50% to the book publisher who in turns pays the author and then about 20% goes towards Bookshop.org fulfilment, operating costs, payment processing and consumer discounts. So as you can see it really is about supporting local independent bookstores.
This is a new website that has just launched and so far these are the Independent Book Shops located in West Wales that have joined and that you can help support.

If you want to find a specific local bookshop to support, you find them on our map and they’ll receive the full profit from your order. Otherwise, your order will contribute to an earnings pool that will be evenly distributed among all the independent bookshops.
So far in the US Bookshop.org has managed to raise £5.7 million independent bookshops and there are around 900 stores partnered in the US, so its hoped that the UK arm of this venture will prove just as successful, if not more so.
So, if you are planning on buying anyone a book for Christmas this really would be a fab opportunity to give a double present one to the reader of the book and some extra pennies to your Local Welsh Bookshop.
