Llyn Llech Owain Country Park is a lovely park near Gorlas, which is made up of 158 acres of land. It has lake in the centre with peat bog and some woodland surrounding it. This is a special place which is actually a designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to it’s rare habitat.
There are specially constructed pathways allowing you to move safely over the peat bog that surrounds the lake and they are suitable for prams, wheelchairs and bikes. These pathways lead you round to the visitor centre which is located next to the lake and has inside an exhibition and information on the management of the Country Park. The Visitor Centre is also the perfect location for bird watching over the lake.
Llyn Llech Owain Country Park, has a pay and display car park, cafe, picnic benches, toilets and a newly refurbished play park for the kids.
The new playground was was officially opened on Friday 4th May 2018 and the theme of the playground incorporates the legend of Llyn Llech Owain. The play park has over 40 play features, includes a castle fortress, seesaw, slides, swings and much more – all based around the theme of knights
The legend has it that Owain Lawgoch was entrusted to look after a well on the mountain Mynydd Mawr. Each day, after extracting enough water for himself and his horse, Owain was careful to replace the stone but once forgot and water poured down the side of the mountain. The resulting lake was named Llyn Llech Owain – the lake of Owain’s slab.
