Swansea Museum

Swansea Museum

Swansea Museum is the oldest museum in Wales and is in a building that was built for the Royal Institution of South Wales back in 1841.

Managed by Swansea City Council, Swansea Museum provides free access to six galleries with a variety of exhibits from an ancient mummy’s tomb to temporary exhibitions on current issues and modern interests.

Marina

The Museum has many boats in its collections and three of these are kept floating in Swansea Marina – the lightship Helwick, a tugboat called Canning and a beautiful pilot cutter named Olga.

Tram Shed

The Tramshed on Dylan Thomas Square, in the Marina, is also run by Swansea Museum and is usually open on bank holidays and special events. It exhibits memorabilia from the street trams of Swansea and also the world famous Mumbles train that ran around the edge of Swansea Bay from Swansea town centre to Mumbles Pier.

The Landore Collections Centre

The Landore Collections Centre is located in the former rolling mills building of the former Hafod/Morfa Copperworks, parts of which date back to the 1830s. It is an open-plan storage space for the reserve collections of both Swansea Museum and the former Maritime and Industrial Museum.
