As part of the Open Doors this year you can join a tour of this spectacular abbey with our expert guide and historian at Neath Abbey.
Bill Zajac is Neath Abbey’s expert guide and historian. He will help you find out more about the site's colourful history and get the chance to explore this hidden gem first-hand.
Originally founded as a daughter house of Savigny in 1130, the abbey was absorbed into the Cistercian order in 1147. Fairly complete remains of the abbey survive, together with the sixteenth-century mansion raised within its precincts.
Join Bill Zajac to explore the long and varied history of this fascinating site. During an extended tour of the site, he will reveal how the abbey’s remains illustrate a succession of pivotal episodes in the history of South Wales, including the Norman advance, the suppression of the monasteries and the early stirrings of the Industrial Revolution.
Neath Abbey Ironworks, near by, is also holding an Open Doors event on the same day. Bill Zajac is also conducting tours there.
