Open Doors at Morriston Tabernacle Chapel

Open Doors at Morriston Tabernacle Chapel

Start Date: 22-09-2018
End Date: 22-09-2018

As part of the Cadw Open Doors this year Morriston Tabernacle Chapel will be offering visitors free entry to explore.

The Grade1 – listed Tabernacle, Morriston, its 160ft spire a prominent landmark in the lower Swansea Valley, was completed in 1872 at a staggering cost of £18,000 making it, according to Professor Anthony Jones, author of Welsh Chapels “ the largest, grandest and most expensive chapel built in Wales”. Its size reflected the huge increase in congregations and the population of Morriston as workers relocated to the town to secure employment in thriving local industries. It embodies the growing religious, social and political influence of Welsh Nonconformity during the late Victorian period. Extensively restored since 1993, it has remains a centre for worship, concerts and social activity and is regularly seen on television programmes such as BBC 1 Songs of Praise and S4C’s Dechrau Canu, Dechrau Canmol. Among its distinctive interior features are the decorated vaulted ceiling, the swooping choir gallery with its three-case organ and the chandeliers, originally gas-powered.  Last year, in an online poll organised by the National Churches Trust, Tabernacle was voted Wales’ favourite place of worship.

Your visit will include a talk on the history of the building and plans for its sustainable future, followed by a demonstration of the organ and an opportunity to view historic photographs over a coffee in the vestry area.

There will be two sessions one from 11.00 - 12.30 and one from 14.30 - 16.00
