Open Doors at Parc Howard Museum

Open Doors at Parc Howard Museum

Start Date: 15-09-2018
End Date: 16-09-2018

Parc Howard Museum in Llanelli is an iconic Italianate style house built in about 1885, gifted to the town in 1912 as a public museum and they are taking part in this year’s Open Doors Event.

Today the museum is home to the largest public collection of Llanelli pottery, and a fine art collection with highlights by J. D. Innes, Hubert von Herkomer, Christopher Williams, and Edward Morland Lewis. It also tells the story of the rise of the town’s industrial heritage, once at the heart of global tinplate manufacture, and includes curiosities, such as the Stepney Spare Wheel, invented and made in Llanelli for early cars and sold worldwide.

Discover what's involved in caring for a historic park. Find out about the treasures and curiosities in the museum collections. And learn about what makes Parc Howard so special, from the ancient settlers to notable residents. Individual event details are listed on 'Parc Howard' and 'Amgueddfeydd Sir Gar-Carmarthenshire Museums' Facebook pages.

The Open Doors programme is a collaboration between Carmarthenshire Museums, Friends of Llanelli Museum, and the Parc Howard Association.

Parc Howard is a large urban park and mansion house approximately 15 minutes walk from Llanelli town centre and up to 25 minutes walk from Llanelli train station. There are various buses that stop at the main gate in Felinfoel Road (ask for Parc Howard Avenue), from Llanelli to Carmarthen (166, 196) and Ammanford (128). On-street parking only at Parc Howard Avenue and Old Road.

There is no parking within the park, although disabled passengers may be dropped off close to the museum entrance. Cars should then be parked in nearby streets.

Parc Howard Museum has ramp and lift access to all public areas. Toilets and changing facilities are available. Most gallery talks are seated and indoors. There are currently no café facilities at Parc Howard but cold drinks and confectionery are available to buy from the museum shop.
