As part of the Cadw Open Doors this year The Old Chapel, Penffordd, Pembrokeshire will be offering visitors free entry to explore.
This building is a 19th century Calvinistic Welsh Chapel, lovingly refurbished as a traditional skills (leather) workshop. It retains many of its original features, including stained glass windows, ceiling roses, Ministers Chair and beautiful ceramic floor tiles in the vestibule.
The chapel has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere, often remarked upon by visitors, and conducive to artistic creation.
Visitors can try their hand at leatherwork and find out how the artists make handbags, wet-mould leather and create theatrical masks. Visitors can also learn about the history of the handbag, the difference between vegetable and chrome tanned leather, hides and skins, and what is meant by a half pair of butts! This year visitors will also enjoy the sound of a Telyn Rawn (horse hair) Harp, recreated and played by Welsh harpist Rhodri Davies.
Tours start at 10am, 11.30am, 2pm and 3.30pm, although visitors are welcome to pop in at any time.
