Swansea Fireworks Night and Christmas Parade Cancelled

The Swansea Council has announced that two of Swansea’s annual winter events have been cancelled this year, to help keep local people safe through the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision to cancel Swansea’s traditional Bonfire Night fireworks show and the city centre Christmas parade has been made in line with current Welsh Government guidance and increasing concerns about the spread of coronavirus linked to large gatherings.

Both of these events that are organised by Swansea Council do attract large crowds and the council want to curb the spread of the virus and avoid a local lockdown.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “I understand that some will be disappointed, especially after last year’s fantastic Christmas parade – but the vast majority of Swansea people will agree that cancellation is the right decision. Our intention is to make the 2021 parade and fireworks the biggest and most spectacular ever.

“Coronavirus is still with us and it’s still deadly. Welsh Government regulations state that 30 is the maximum number for outdoor gatherings and that social distancing should continue – and there’s no indication that these will be relaxed in time to allow the thousands of visitors we normally see.

“We have no option but to cancel – others are doing the same.

“We now hope that events of this nature can come back stronger than ever next year.”

The council is looking at all options that could – within government guidance – help city residents and businesses mark key times of year and the traditional Waterfront Winterland and city centre Christmas market form part of those discussions.
