Carmarthen Castle

This Castle is a ruined castle in Carmarthen, that overlooks the River Twyi and is an interesting Castle with some strong heritage to visit in Carmarthenshire.

The castle was converted into a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries, now no longer used as a prison it is owned by Carmarthenshire Council and although right next to the large chateaux style Council Building it is still possible to visit the castle. The remains of Carmarthen Castle have been Grade I heritage listed since 1954, as “substantial remains of a major medieval castle”.

Around the turn of the 21st century parts of the castle, the Square Tower and Southwest Tower, were made accessible following a detailed archaeological investigation. A number of surrounding buildings were removed to improve the visibility of the castle. The upper levels of the gatehouse and shell keep were opened to the public (with full access around the ground level) for the first time in 2003. There is a grass area with benches at the top of the keep’s mound. The Castle House, within the remaining castle walls is currently used as a museum and where Carmarthen’s Tourist Information Centre is.
