It’s always important to keep a well-stocked first aid kit in your family home so you can deal with any minor accidents and injuries emergencies. Although not everyone is sure what you should have in it, so to help we have put together a Handy First Aid Kit Checklist for Families.

First off it goes without saying its so important to keep your first aid kit in a cool, dry place ideally locked away or at least up high and completely out of reach of any children.

Creams and Ointments

  • Calamine
  • Vaseline
  • Bonjela
  • Arnica Gel
  • Antiseptic Cream, like Savlon or Germolene
  • Cortisone Cream
  • Eye Drops / Ointment
  • Chapstick
  • Sunscreen
  • Teething Gel (If applicable)
  • Nappy Rash Cream, like Sudacream / Bepanthen (if applicable)


Bleeding and Wounds

  • Plasters in Various size
  • Butterfly Bandages
  • Steri-strips
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Sterile gauze dressings
  • Rolled bandages, in various sizes
  • Arm Sling / Triangle Bandage
  • Eye Wash
  • Eye Pad
  • Finger / Knuckle bandage


Colds and Flu

  • Honey and Glycerine
  • Decongestant
  • Cough Medicine
  • Nasal Spray
  • Baby Nasal Aspirator (If applicable)
  • Chest Rub – Remember not all Adult ones can be used on Children



  • Burn relief ointment
  • Burnshield, Burn Dressing
  • Aloe Vera Cream
  • Vitamin E Cream


Fever and Pain

  • Thermometer, ideally digital
  • Paracetamol – Tablets for Adults liquid for children
  • Ibuprofen – Tablets for Adults liquid for children
  • Pain relieving spray
  • Rehydration salts, such as dioralyte
  • Anti-diarrhoea medication, such as immodium
  • Antacid, like Gaviscon
  • Muscle Cream, like Deep Freeze or Voltoral
  • Eye Drops
  • Earache Drops
  • Colic medicine, like Infacol, Gripe water or Ashton and Parsons (If applicable)


Skin Care

  • Bug Spray
  • Sting / Bite soothing cream, such as Antihistamine
  • Sunscreen
  • After Sun
  • Ice Pack, obviously kept in the freezer


Miscellaneous Supplies

  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Cotton Swabs and Balls
  • Scissors
