How to Apply for Free School Transport in Carmarthenshire

If you’re a parent of a child that is starting primary or secondary school in Carmarthenshire this September, you might be entitled to apply for free school transport and we have all the info about how you do that.

If you think your child might be entitled to free school transport and they are starting primary or secondary school in Carmarthenshire this September then it’s important to think ahead and submit your application as early as you can.

It’s worth thinking about the fact that your application maybe refused, and you end up going through the referral process, so if this isn’t done soon you might miss the start of the new academic year.

Carmarthenshire Council has released a statement saying that “Anyone who leaves it too late could find that there is no transport in place for them when they start in the new school in September, and have to wait whilst extra capacity is arranged, which can take weeks.”

The other thing parents are warned of, is if they leave it too late they may find that the bus nearest to their home is already full and that their child will have to travel to another bus route which is further away from their address.

Spare Seats on School Transport in Carmarthenshire

For pupils not eligible for free transport because they live too close to the school and there is no public transport, Carmarthenshire Council used to run a concessionary scheme where spare seats on an existing school bus can be made available once all the eligible pupils have been allocated their seats at a cost to parents.

However, new unexpected legislation brought in by Department for Transport (DfT), which will be enforced from 1st January 2020, means bus operators will no longer be able to offer seats to fare-paying passengers unless they provide full disabled access. Which means school buses must be fitted with a number of additional features to assist accessibility, including wheelchair lifts.

Therefore, some of the Spare Seats availability across Carmarthenshire has been affected – Read More about Paid-for School Bus Seats Coming to an End in West Wales
