Could American Toast’em Pop-Ups Fix Your Mornings?

Summer holidays with the kids can be brilliant, but let’s be honest, trying to keep everyone fed and happy for six weeks straight is no joke. That’s where Toast’em Pop-Ups came to the rescue in our house. These toaster pastries turned up just when we was running out of breakfast ideas, and they’ve been a proper lifesaver.

We were sent a selection of these breakfast snacks to try out with the kids, with the usual deal to share our honest thoughts. But after weeks of testing with our brutally honest little critics, we’d be shouting about them regardless.

What Are Toast’em Pop-Ups Then?

So these are basically the original toaster pastries from 1963, sweet filling wrapped in pastry with frosting on top. You can eat them straight from the packet or chuck them in the toaster for that proper gooey, warm experience.

Worldwide Global Brands have brought them over from America and you can get them at Iceland or Amazon now. They do loads of flavours: Strawberry, Cookies & Crème, Blueberry, S’mores, Chocolate Fudge, Cherry, Wild Berry, and Brown Sugar Cinnamon. Each pack has 6 pastries, though you can get bigger family packs if you’re feeling brave.

Unpacking These American Toaster Pastries

When the box turned up, we’ll be honest, the bright packaging does scream sugar rush rather than healthy start to the day. But you know what, sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re dealing with grumpy children and a packed schedule.

The foil packets inside look proper American, all shiny and colourful. Each pastry is individually wrapped, which is handy for chucking in bags but not brilliant for the environment.

Testing Time: Four Flavours, Real Kids

We tried Frosted S’mores, Frosted Strawberry, Frosted Cookies & Crème, and Frosted Chocolate Fudge with our lot. And blimey, the second they ripped open these breakfast snacks packets, the kitchen filled with this sweet, sugary smell that had the kids appearing from nowhere like moths to a flame.

How They Actually Tasted

Frosted Chocolate Toast'ems Pop Ups

The Chocolate Fudge was the clear winner in our house. Properly chocolatey without being sickly, and rich enough to actually keep the kids satisfied until lunchtime.

Smores Toast'em Pop Ups

S’mores was a surprise hit, just like you eat at a campfire but in a good way. The marshmallow and chocolate combo worked really well, even if the closest we get to camping is a soggy weekend in Tenby.

Strawberry Toast'ems Pop Ups

Strawberry went down well with our youngest. Plus too they’re fruity enough to feel slightly less guilty about giving them sugar for breakfast, and not too artificial tasting.

Cookies and creme Toast'ems Pop Ups

Cookies & Crème was lovely, with a properly creamy filling that actually tasted like someone had mashed up decent biscuits.

How We Actually Used Them

Here’s where these breakfast snacks really proved their worth during the holidays. They became our go-to for all sorts of situations:

  • Quick breakfast when we’d all overslept and needed to get out the door for a day trip. Pop them in the toaster while you’re throwing clothes at the kids and everyone’s fed in minutes.
  • Car snacks for long journeys simply eaten cold straight from the packet, no mess, no drama. Much better than stopping at service stations and paying a fortune for rubbish.
  • Emergency hunger fixes when dinner was running late and the kids were getting properly stroppy. One pastry each bought us enough peace to actually get food on the table.
  • Picnic treats that didn’t need a cool bag or worry about going off in the heat.

The Parent Reality Check

Look, these aren’t exactly the most nutritious breakfast option we get that, but they do the job when life gets mental. They’ve got a long shelf life so we can stick a few packs in the cupboard and forget about them until we need them.

Storage is dead easy, as they just live in the kitchen cupboard. Heating them up couldn’t be simpler: low setting on the toaster for a minute or two, or few seconds in the microwave if you’re in a proper rush.

One massive warning though, if you overheat them, that filling gets absolutely molten. We made that mistake once and our eldest nearly took the roof off. Always give them a minute to cool down before handing them over.

Did they fill the kids up? Actually, yes. Two toaster pastries kept ours going until lunch, which is more than I can say for some of the expensive cereal bars we’ve wasted money on in the past.

What’s Good and What’s Not

The Good Bits

  • Loads of flavours so even fussy kids will find something they like.
  • You can eat them cold, which is brilliant for car journeys or when you can’t be bothered with the toaster.
  • They last ages in the cupboard, so perfect for stocking up.
  • Cheaper than the fancy alternatives but taste just as good.
  • Zero washing up involved.

The Not So Good

  • That filling gets seriously hot when overheated, like proper molten lava stuff.
  • They’re definitely breakfast treats rather than actual nutritional everyday option.

So, Are They Worth It?

We’re not going to pretend these are superfood breakfast bowls. But as parents who’s been there with the forgotten lunch boxes, the overslept mornings, and the “what’s for tea?” meltdowns at 4pm, these have been properly useful.

They’re now a permanent fixture in our emergency cupboard, sitting next to the pasta, that one lonely baked beans tin and the emergency chocolate stash. Because for us some days, getting everyone fed and out the door with minimal drama is more important than the perfect balanced meal.

Who should try them? Any parent who needs reliable backup plans. If you’ve got fussy eaters who turn their nose up at porridge, or you just want something quick and cheerful for those chaotic mornings, these are worth a go.

The price is decent too at around £1.50 per pack they won’t break the bank, and it’s loads cheaper than panic-buying snacks when you’re out and about.

Where to Get Them

You can grab them when you’re doing your weekly shop at Iceland or order them from Amazon if you want to try different flavours without traipsing round the shops.

Would we buy them again? Absolutely. These breakfast snacks have earned their place alongside all the other “just in case” stuff that keeps family life ticking over. Sometimes being practical trumps being perfect, and these definitely deliver when you need them to.

The kids love these, they’re dead easy to use, and they’ve got us out of more breakfast disasters than we care to count. What’s not to like? For more family-friendly ideas that don’t just look good, but gets eaten too, why not check out our other food and drink reviews.
