Oystermouth Castle
Oystermouth Castle in Swansea is a fantastic place for a family day out. Nestled on a hill overlooking Swansea Bay, this historic gem offers stunning views over Mumbles and promises an adventure-filled day for everyone. With a rich history and recent restorations making it safer and more accessible, Oystermouth Castle is a must-visit.
The castle has undergone significant work to ensure its safety and sustainability. Glamorgan Gwent archaeologists have meticulously excavated the site, revealing hidden treasures like private staircases from vaults to old banqueting halls. The staircases have been lightened with lime-washed walls and fitted with rope handrails for safety. One of the highlights is a 30-foot high glass bridge, offering views that have been concealed for centuries. As you explore, look out for ancient graffiti art from the 14th century, adding a unique touch to your visit. A maze of rooms, previously inaccessible, are now open to the public, making it a fun and educational experience for kids and adults alike.
Oystermouth Castle is managed by Swansea City Council and the Friends of Oystermouth Castle, ensuring it remains a well-maintained and welcoming site. It can get quite busy during the summer months, so it’s good to plan your visit and car parking in advance.
Due to the nature of the terrain where there are steep steps, access can be limited for wheelchair users and pushchairs, but is possible to the visitor centre where there is an audio visual presentation that showcases the rooms inside the castle.
Car Parking Info
There are three main car parks at the bottom of Oystermouth Village on Mumbles Road. If these are full, try the Underhill car parks at the top of the village. From Mumbles Road, turn up Newton Road when you see the White Rose pub. Continue past Marks & Spencer until you reach a junction with traffic lights. You’ll see a school playground on your right and a church on your left.
To find the paid car park, turn left past the church into Langland Road. The car park is about 120 yards on the right. It’s a five-minute walk to the castle from here. For free parking, continue straight up Newton Road, with the playing fields on your left. Pass the cemetery on your right, and at the top of the park, before the houses, you’ll see a car park sign on the left. Turn into the narrow road and park among the trees. The walk to the castle from here is about 10 minutes.
