How the application works: step by step

Step 1: Find your designated school
Your designated school is the one your child has priority for based on your home address. If you’re not sure which school that is, contact the NPT School Admissions Team or call 01639 763580. Most children end up at their designated school, but you can apply for any school you like.

Step 2: Apply online via the Citizens Portal
Most applications are made through the NPT Citizens Portal. You’ll need to register with a valid email address before you can start. Paper application forms are also available if you prefer — download them from the NPT admissions page or email the team to request one.

Step 3: List more than one school preference
You can list multiple preferences in order. Always use more than one slot. If your first choice is full and you’ve only listed one school, the council won’t know what your second or third preference would have been, and you could end up with no suitable place at all. Listing more preferences does not reduce your chances of getting your first choice.

Step 4: Submit one application per child
If you have twins or siblings applying at the same time, you need to submit a separate application for each child. You can use the same account to do this.

Step 5: Accept your offer
When you receive your allocation letter, follow the instructions to accept or decline. Once accepted, contact the school to agree a start date.

Nursery places in Neath Port Talbot

Primary schools across Neath Port Talbot offer part-time nursery provision. Your child can access a place from the start of the term after they turn three, or from the day after their third birthday, as long as there is space in the class.

Applications for children born between 1 September 2026 and 31 August 2027 opened online from 6 October 2025. You can also download a paper form from the NPT nursery admissions page or email admissions@npt.gov.uk.

Attending nursery at a school does not give your child automatic entry into the Reception class there. You must submit a completely separate application for the Reception place, and your child will be considered alongside all other applicants.

There is no right of appeal if a nursery place is refused.

Faith schools and church schools in Neath Port Talbot

Neath Port Talbot has both Church in Wales and Roman Catholic schools, and the application process varies slightly depending on which school you’re applying for.

For Alderman Davies CIW Primary, Bryncoch CIW Primary and St Joseph’s RC Primary, you apply online through the NPT Citizens Portal in the same way as any community school.

For St Joseph’s RC Infant School, St Joseph’s RC Junior and St Therese’s RC Primary, you need to contact those schools directly to request an application form — they handle their own admissions separately.

School transport in Neath Port Talbot

If you apply for a school that is not your designated local authority school, you will be responsible for getting your child there and covering the cost yourself. This applies even if your child is awarded the place through a successful appeal. If you’re unsure which school is your designated school, contact the admissions team before applying.

What if you’re refused a place?

First, don’t panic. You have a few options and you can use more than one at the same time.

Appeal — If you’re refused a place at a community school, you have the right to appeal in writing to an independent Appeal Panel. The panel consists of three to five members who are independent of the council and the school, and their decision is binding. Your allocation letter will explain the reasons for refusal and the steps to follow. There is no right of appeal for nursery refusals.

Waiting list — If you indicate on your application that you’d like to be kept on the waiting list, your child’s name will be held for any places that come up after the initial allocation. If more than one child is on the list when a place becomes available, it’s allocated using the same oversubscription criteria as the original round, not by how long you’ve been waiting.

Apply to another school — Applying elsewhere won’t affect your appeal or your waiting list position, and it means your child has a confirmed place to go to. Always worth doing alongside an appeal.

Yes. Living near a school or in its catchment area doesn’t guarantee a place and you won’t be considered unless you apply. There is no automatic allocation.

Use the address where your child permanently lives. If care is split equally between two addresses, contact the admissions team for guidance on which address to use. Using a grandparent’s or childminder’s address is not acceptable and could result in a place being withdrawn.

Check your junk and spam folders first. Hotmail, Yahoo, BT Internet and AOL accounts are known to filter these emails incorrectly. If it’s still not there, email admissions@npt.gov.uk for help.

Yes, you can use the same account but you must submit a completely separate application for each child. Do not try to include both children on one form.

Yes. In-year applications are for children who need a place outside the normal September intake. Download the in-year transfer form from the NPT in-year admissions page or contact the admissions team directly. Applications are processed within 15 school days or 28 calendar days of receipt, whichever is sooner.
