Swansea School Admissions: How to Apply for a School Place

Whether you’re sorting a Reception place or getting ready for the Year 7 move, this guide walks you through the Swansea school admissions process without the council-website overwhelm. Just the stuff you actually need to know.

Heads up: Even if a school has told you there are spaces, your child cannot start until you’ve applied formally and received written confirmation from Swansea Council.

Note: The online system for Reception and Year 7 September 2026 closed on 28 November 2025. If you missed the deadline, late applications are still accepted but will only be considered after all on-time applications have been processed.

How the application works: step by step

Step 1: Find your catchment school
Most children attend their catchment area school, though this isn’t always the nearest one to your home. If you’re not sure which school that is, contact the Swansea School Admissions and Inclusion Team or check directly with local schools.

Step 2: Read the Information for Parents booklet
Swansea ask that you read this before applying as you’ll need to confirm you’ve read it before you can submit. It covers how places are allocated and the oversubscription criteria. It’s worth a proper read rather than a skim.

Step 3: Register and apply online
All applications for Reception and Year 7 are made online. You’ll need to register with a valid email address first. Only one application per child — if more than one is submitted, only the most recent will be processed.

Step 4: List up to three school preferences
You can name up to three schools in order of preference. Always use all three slots. If your first choice is full, you’ll still be in the running for your second and third. Listing only one school and being refused means you could end up with no place at all.

Step 5: Submit before the deadline
Late applications are only looked at after every on-time application has been processed. By then, many places will already be gone. If you’re close to the deadline, don’t leave it until the last minute — technical support closes at 4pm on the final day.

Step 6: Accept your offer
You’ll be notified by letter or email on the offer day. Log into your online account to accept or decline. Once accepted, contact the school to sort the start date.

Nursery places in Swansea

Every primary school in Swansea, including Welsh-medium schools, offers part-time nursery provision. Your child can access a nursery place from the start of the term after they turn three, subject to availability at your preferred school.

Nursery is not compulsory, so it’s entirely your choice whether to take up a place. To apply, contact your preferred school directly to request an application form — nursery places are not applied for through the council’s online system.

Getting a nursery place at a school does not give your child automatic entry into Reception there. You’ll need to put in a completely separate application for the Reception place and your child will be considered alongside all other applicants.

There is no right of appeal if a nursery place is refused.

Welsh-medium education in Swansea

All Welsh-medium primary schools in Swansea offer nursery provision. If you’re considering a Welsh-medium school, it’s worth knowing that the majority of children attending these schools don’t speak Welsh at home — schools provide full support to help children and families along the way. Research consistently shows bilingual children do well across both languages, including English.

You can apply for a Welsh-medium school through exactly the same process as any other school.

School transport in Swansea

Free transport is provided for pupils who live at least two miles from their catchment primary school, or at least three miles from their catchment secondary school, measured by the shortest available walking route.

If you apply to a school that isn’t your designated catchment school, transport costs are your responsibility regardless of the distance. This applies even if your child gets the place through a successful appeal.

What if you’re refused a place?

First, don’t panic. You have a few options and you can use more than one at the same time.

Appeal — You have the right to appeal any refusal for a full-time school place (nursery refusals cannot be appealed). For Year 7 refusals, you have from 3 March to 27 March 2026 to request an appeal form. For Reception refusals, the window is 17 April to 14 May 2026. Contact the School Admissions and Inclusion Team to get your form. For voluntary aided (faith) schools, contact the school directly as they handle their own appeals.

Waiting list — If you don’t get your preferred school, your child’s name is automatically added to the waiting list for that school. You don’t need to do anything extra. Accepting a place elsewhere won’t affect your position on the list. Places that come up are allocated by the oversubscription criteria, not by how long you’ve been waiting, so your position on the list can change at any time as new applications come in.

Apply to another school — Applying elsewhere won’t affect your appeal or your waiting list position, and it means your child has a confirmed place to go to. Always worth doing alongside an appeal.
