As part of the Open Doors this year St Eloi’s church will be open for visitors and will have short guides will be available for visitors to read in the church or take home.
St Eloi’s Church was rebuilt from fragmentary medieval ruins in the 1920s by the architect John Coates Carter. The building is characteristic of the architect’s later work in its use of indigenous materials and identifiable Welsh vernacular motifs.
Inside, the space is dominated by the splendid rood loft, carved screen and simple pulpit, all standing against the west face of the medieval screen wall. The church has two stone fonts – one built from a few ancient stones discovered during excavation.
The colourful reredos is the showpiece of the church but look out for the fantastic 20th century stained glass too.
