All aboard for a spectacular journey back in time at the Swansea Waterfront Museum! Gear up for a fantastic family day out at the Steam Day, a unique event that promises to steam up your curiosity and offer a glimpse into the revolutionary world of rail transport. It’s your chance to witness the amazing Penydarren steam locomotive not just on display, but on the move!

This special day is dedicated to celebrating the ground breaking achievements of the Penydarren steam locomotive. For those who love a bit of history mixed with mechanical marvels, this is an event you simply can’t miss. The Penydarren holds a place of pride in the annals of transport history, being the original locomotive to make the first recorded journey by steam on rails. Back on 21 February 1804, this technological wonder chugged its way from Penydarren to Abercynon, hauling a hefty load of ten tons of iron and around seventy adventurous souls who snagged a free ride. It was a journey that would kickstart a transport revolution in the nineteenth century, changing the way we moved goods and ourselves forever.

“Steam Day” at the Swansea Waterfront Museum offers a rare opportunity to see a piece of this history come alive as we fire up a replica of Richard Trevithick’s legendary steam locomotive and drive her down the track. It’s a sight that’s as educational as it is thrilling, providing a tangible link to the past and the ingenious engineering that paved the way for modern rail travel.

Please note, this steam spectacle is weather dependent, so we’re all hoping for clear skies and favourable conditions to let this historical gem shine. But, come rain or shine, the museum promises a day of discovery and fun, making it the perfect outing for families looking to ignite their imaginations and learn something new.
