What do we know about St David?
We don’t know loads about St David as he lived a very long time ago, but it’s thought that his Dad was Saint Non and his Grandad was Ceredig ap Cunedda – The King of Ceredigion. He was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop of Mynyw which is now known as St David’s and he spent his life spreading the word of Christianity across Wales.

St David has his own flag, which is often used as an alternative to the National Welsh Flag with the dragon on it. St David’s Flag is a Black Background with Yellow Cross.
St David is the reason the Leek became the National Emblem of Wales?
Legend says that it was St David that ordered his Welsh soldiers wear the leek on their helmets as a way to identify themselves during a battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field.
What is St David’s Emblem?
White Doves is the Emblem of St David. The reason for this comes from during one of his well-known miracles. It is said that whilst St David was preaching in the middle of a large crowd at the Synod of Brefi in the village of Llanddewi Brefi, the ground he stood on is rose up and created a small hill. During this time a white dove came and settled on his shoulder and ever since was known as his emblem. It was also at this time that he was declared an archbishop.
Why do we celebrate St David on the 1st of March?
No one is a 100% sure but it is thought that St David died on the 1st of March and ever since that date is now marked as St David’s Day

What do we do to celebrate St David’s Day?
There are a few ways that people celebrate St David’s Day. Many people wear a daffodil or Leek on their clothes. Some children wear Welsh costume or other children wear Red clothes such as a Red Welsh Rugby Shirt. Many towns and cities in Wales hold St David’s Day Parade that people can join in and march through the streets.
