Ministry of Science Live! at Aberystwyth Arts Centre is bringing big explosions, fire tornados, and genuinely brilliant science to Ceredigion this Easter. Direct from London’s West End, this high-energy show is aimed at kids aged 6 to 12 and runs for around 90 minutes with a 20-minute interval, so little bladders and shorter attention spans are well catered for.
The show looks at how science has shaped the modern world, covering the scientists, engineers, and inventors behind some of history’s biggest breakthroughs. It’s educational, but you’d never know it was the point. Expect 20-foot liquid nitrogen clouds, exploding hydrogen balloons, hydrogen bottle rockets, ignited methane, fire tornados, and a self-built hovercraft. It’s loud, it’s spectacular, and it moves fast. The kind of show where kids sit with their mouths open for the full first half and spend the interval telling you everything they just saw.
What makes Ministry of Science Live worth the trip is that it genuinely works on both levels. The science is real, the experiments are curriculum-linked, and the presenters take an anarchic, high-energy approach that keeps even easily distracted kids locked in. It’s the sort of thing they’ll be talking about for weeks, and probably attempting to recreate in the kitchen, so consider yourself warned.
A few things to flag before you book: the show includes flashing lights, fire effects, smoke, loud bangs, and latex. The venue asks that anyone with access needs or seating requirements gets in touch before booking to make sure everything is arranged.
