Meet the Farmer at Margam Park runs every Friday throughout the school summer holidays, giving families the chance to get up close to the animals on the Farm Trail and hear all about them from one of the park’s own farmers. Sessions take place at the show pen on the Farm Trail at 1pm, where you can meet new arrivals, learn about the rare breeds kept at Margam, and ask the farmer any questions you’ve got about life on the trail.
The Farm Trail itself is home to a good mix of animals. There are pygmy goats, small, docile and surprisingly good climbers, along with alpacas known for their soft fleece and their less charming habit of spitting when annoyed. Rabbits, sheep, including rare Welsh breeds like Black Welsh Mountain and Llanwenog, and a colourful selection of poultry including Silkie chickens, guinea fowl and even a peacock round out the trail, alongside donkeys, which can live for decades and are known for remembering faces and places for years.
Animal feeding stations are dotted along the Farm Trail, and bags of animal food cost £1.60, available from the car park entrance cabin or the Gift Shop in the Castle Visitor Courtyard. Daily alpaca feeding sessions with the Friends of Margam Park also run at 12.30pm. Only food bought at the park should be given to the animals, and visitors are asked not to touch them, using the hand wash station at the end of the visit for everyone’s safety.
