The Road, Rail & Steam Weekend at Gwili Steam Railway brings two days of steam trains, vintage vehicles and plenty of nostalgia to the Carmarthenshire countryside. Alongside the regular steam services out to Dan-y-Coed, there’ll be road steam engines, classic cars, tractors and commercial vehicles on display at Abergwili Junction to wander round between trains.
There are a few rare treats too. Hop aboard the Wickham Trolley W38, a former railway inspection vehicle, for a short return trip, or take the controls yourself with Driver for a Fiver in one of the vintage diesel shunters. A heritage diesel cab ride is also on offer for anyone wanting a taste of life on the footplate.
It’s a great weekend for road and rail fans, and dogs are welcome too.
About the Venue
Gwili Railway is one of the most picturesque preserved lines in Wales, following the River Gwili through farmland and wooded hillsides from its base at Abergwili Junction near Carmarthen. It’s known for its friendly, enthusiastic volunteers, who are always happy to share stories about the railway’s history and locomotives.
There are toilet facilities on the platform, including a wide access toilet that doubles as a baby changing unit. The large car park has a gravelled stone surface, with dedicated disabled parking spaces near the Ticket Office and next to the tearooms. The booking office and shop are just off the car park to your right, with a second hand Bookshed alongside it.
On busy days, such as Cream Tea days and special events, it’s worth allowing extra time to get to the railway and catch your train. Arriving around 20 minutes before departure is a good idea.
Pricing and Booking
Open seating tickets are £20 for anyone aged 16 and over, and £16 for children aged 15 and under. A private compartment for up to four people costs £80. The Wickham Trolley is £5 per person, with spaces limited to five people per trip, and this can be added to your main booking online. Driver for a Fiver and the heritage diesel cab ride are both bought on the day at the shop, priced at £5 and £2 per person respectively (age restrictions apply). Tickets are valid all day, so there’s no need to rush.
