Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park sits on a headland in Gwbert, just 200 metres from Cardigan Island nature reserve, with sweeping views over the Teifi Estuary and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. On this family-run working farm you can meet sheep, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, ponies, donkeys, guinea pigs, rabbits, llamas and alpacas, feeding some of them with food bought from the entrance desk.
The clifftop location is also brilliant for wildlife spotting, with Atlantic grey seals often hauled out on the rocks below (look out for seal pups in September and October), plus regular sightings of Europe’s largest resident population of bottlenose dolphins. Children can burn off energy on the timber adventure trail, swings and sandpit outdoors, or build with giant blocks in the indoor construction zone. There’s a café serving breakfast, light lunches and cakes with estuary views, a gift shop stocking Welsh crafts and toys, and camping facilities if you fancy staying longer to explore the coastline.
About Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park
Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park has been run by the same family since 1993, part of Clyn-yr-Ynys farm, which they’ve worked since 1884, overlooking Cardigan Island and the Heritage Coast. It’s in the hamlet of Gwbert, about 3 miles (10 minutes) from Cardigan, best reached by following the brown tourist signs from town rather than relying on satnav alone, since the postcode is centred on Gwbert Golf Club and can take you to the wrong spot.
The grass walkways around the Farm Park are wide enough for wheelchairs, though as a rural site some paths have long slopes and can be a bit lumpy and bumpy. Most electric wheelchair users manage fine, while those pushing a manual chair can sometimes find it harder going, and there are plenty of benches along the route to rest.
Dogs are welcome under control on a short lead throughout the Farm Park, including the outdoor café patio where water bowls are provided, though they’re not permitted in the indoor café or around play equipment. Make sure you clear up after your dog and don’t leave them in the car. All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, and it’s worth following the interpretive signs dotted around the park to learn more about the animals, wildlife and plant life as you go.
